BitWaves South Australia's 90's and 2000's
This weekend, southern South Australia will face extreme weather conditions as damaging winds, heavy showers, thunderstorms, and potentially record-breaking waves and sea levels are forecast. These severe weather events come after the state’s driest start to the year on record, particularly affecting agricultural areas.
Adelaide and surrounding regions will be bracing for wind gusts ranging between 90-120km/h, with the South Australian State Emergency Service (SES) urging residents to take precautions. The SES has warned that strong winds combined with dry conditions could result in uprooted trees and fallen branches, especially in areas where trees are already stressed due to the prolonged dry spell.
Along the coastlines, dangerous storm surges are expected to push ocean swells to heights between six and nine meters, potentially breaking the record high for May of 8.5 meters. These conditions are likely to coincide with the highest tide of the year next Wednesday, making coastal areas especially vulnerable.
Craig Brassington, SES State Duty Officer, emphasized the importance of proactive measures. “The rapid onset of destructive or damaging winds is often the main reason for property damage. These winds can bring down power lines, causing power disruptions,” he said. “We encourage people to visit the SES website to undertake simple, proactive steps to minimise potential storm damage.”
The SES recommends trimming overhanging tree branches and clearing gutters, downpipes, and drains to prevent blockages from leaf litter. Additionally, securing outdoor furniture and children’s play equipment is crucial to prevent them from being blown around by the forecasted damaging winds.
With the dry conditions continuing across much of the state, the Country Fire Service (CFS) has issued a warning to remain vigilant regarding burn-offs and campfires. “Dry conditions combined with strong winds significantly heighten the risk of fires spreading,” said CFS State Duty Commander Ann Buesnel. “Please assess conditions carefully and take appropriate safety precautions, especially near scrub or timbered vegetation.”
Meteorologist Hannah Colhoun from the Bureau of Meteorology highlighted the severity of the approaching weather. “Over the weekend, a vigorous weather system will move across southern South Australia. The strongest winds will occur late Sunday and into Monday, bringing squally showers, large waves, and high sea levels. This will be the strongest cold front since at least last winter,” she said.
Safety Tips from the SES:
Trim trees and branches that could fall on your home or property.
