Maybe you simply love music and have always thought it would be fun to have a radio show. Maybe you live in regional South Australia and want to talk about your town, your local events and the people doing good things around you. Maybe you are involved in a sporting club, community group or local organisation and want to give that community a stronger voice.
Or maybe radio and media is where you want your career to go. BitWaves also welcomes aspiring announcers, journalism and media students, social media people, producers, designers, technical volunteers and people who want useful real-world experience.
You do not need to squeeze yourself into one box. Tell us what you care about, what you already know, what you would like to learn and where you think you could make BitWaves better.
Community radio really does mean community.
Some of the best community radio comes from ordinary people with something genuine to share. You might know every song from a particular decade, follow a local footy league, love what is happening in your town, know the local music scene, or simply have the kind of personality people enjoy listening to.
BitWaves can be a place to turn that enthusiasm into a show, a segment, local coverage, community content or a role behind the scenes. We are interested in people from Adelaide and right across regional South Australia.

One pathway: turn your interest into a media portfolio.
If you are thinking about radio school, studying broadcasting, journalism, communications or media, recently finished a course, or simply trying to break into presenting, production, news, social media or digital content, BitWaves can give suitable volunteers a place to turn that interest into real work.
You do not need to arrive with a polished aircheck. Start where you are, build confidence behind the microphone, learn how a live station operates and create real material you can shape into an announcer demo, aircheck or media portfolio.
I want real radio experienceBitWaves is a volunteer community radio organisation, not an accredited training provider and we cannot promise employment — but real-world practice and a stronger demo can help you show what you can do.

Help plan, create and manage content across BitWaves social channels — from show promotion and short-form video to community stories and campaigns.
Bring your club, sport or community into the conversation through interviews, updates, local coverage and new program ideas.
Work on promos, station imaging, audio production, show elements and the sound that ties BitWaves together.
Create artwork for shows, social media, events, campaigns and the wider BitWaves brand.
Build relationships with events, organisations and communities across South Australia and help BitWaves show up where people are.
Interested in websites, streaming, audio systems, apps or technical production? There are plenty of useful things to build and improve behind the scenes.
Help connect BitWaves with supporters, sponsors and community partners that make more local radio possible.
For home-based on-air roles
This section only applies if you want to present or contribute audio from home. Journalism, social media, community, design, partnerships and most behind-the-scenes roles do not require you to buy broadcast equipment. For home broadcasting, you do not need an expensive studio to start: a clean microphone signal, wired headphones, a computer and a stable internet connection are the important bits. If you already own equivalent gear, use it — these are examples, not a compulsory shopping list.
A reliable Mac or Windows computer for your broadcast connection and show preparation.
Reliable broadband. Ethernet is ideal when practical because it removes one more source of Wi-Fi dropouts.
A proper USB microphone is enough to start. Position it close to you in a reasonably quiet room.
Closed-back wired headphones are best for monitoring. Bluetooth can introduce noticeable delay.
The easiest path into a home show. Plug the microphone straight into your computer, connect wired headphones and you are ready for the hardware side.
A microphone such as the RØDE PodMic USB can connect directly by USB now, then move to XLR later if you add a mixer or interface.
For a more hands-on radio feel, a RØDECaster Duo gives you physical faders, processing, pads, multiple inputs and dedicated headphone outputs in one compact desk.
If you want several microphones, more physical faders and room for guests or other production work, the RØDECaster Pro II is the bigger step up.
If you are unsure what will work with BitWaves, apply or ask us first. We would rather help you choose sensible gear than see you spend money you did not need to spend.
